The Morse Debate

What is the morse debate, it is about not having to pass a morse test to work the HF bands

Before I go any further, I am NOT anti-morse, far from it. Many stations feel it will be the end of the hobby, I find this hard to see. Other who like morse fear that ssb will swamp parts of the band where morse is sent.

There are so many modes that other stations use, it would never be the end of the hobby. As for the band plan, as far as I am aware this is not going to be changed, morse will still have its slot in the plan.

Some stations on both side of the debate turn to insults, as they cannot justify the argument.

You want every thing for nothing

You do not have the intelligents to do morse

This is no way to put forward a reason for keeping morse, If you have a reason why morse should be retained, then make your point about morse not personal comments. I am more than sure if morse is remove it will be on its merits NOT based on personal comments.

Lets look at the reasons for keeping morse

Morse will get through when phone will not

This is true, but there are many new modes that are as good.

The equipment is very easy to build.

When we take the hobby as a whole not many stations construct thier own radios or keys.

If you were to look at most of the arguments put forward, they were valid 25 to 30 years ago, before most of these new mode were around. As a hobby we have moved on, but as we have moved on, there have been stations that have objected to every new move.

I see in many arguments, by ready the comment, that for some stations it will mean a loss of status. I feel this is sad state of affairs, that all a person has in life is he or she want to be seen above others in the hobby. Not part of the hobby in full.I am more than sure that most stations when first in this hobby meet at least one station that talks down to them because he can use morse makes him or her feel superior.

I have heard the argument that if you do not know morse you are not good enough to use HF. I know many stations that go to thier local club, and work HF as there are A licence stations in the building. I know of one station who is married to a class A station, who spends 99% of his time on HF under his wifes call. He has no problems, nobody can tell he is only a class B, by his operations, where does the argument that B class stations could not work on HF because they do not know morse stand in these cases.

Is it not time to say morse should have the same status as other modes, it is time it stood on its own feet. If it dies, then that is because it is not wanted. Is it not time to stop this I have more intelligents than you or I am superior to others because I know morse. There are many stations out there, who are very intelligent, and it is an insult as well as arrogent to say you are a better person because you know morse.

So when debating the pro's and con's of morse, lets put forward the facts not comment that cannot be looked at.
