Game

http://wombat.doc.ic.ac.uk/fascist/fascist.html
You'll take ages to figure out this strange email game. It's not that it has no rules. On the contrary, the object is to make them up. If they are accepted, your score changes in a way you won't be able to understand, until you've spent some considerable time here. Confused? That's the general idea.

You Don't Know Jack

http://www.berksys.com/www/products/ydkj.html
Up 'til now, if you haven't had a CD-Rom drive you've been missing out on the ultimate adrenaline rush kitsch trivia quiz show You Don't Know Jack. Only the demo version is available here, it takes forever to download and demands a huge chunk of your system but, hey, it's partytime. Grab a couple of friends and get ready to play. You start minutes before transmission, your palms sweating, at the greatest gameshow on earth. An ingenuous host cracks a few sarky remarks, a few cheesy themes play in your head and then WHUMPH! you're on air. You need a formula one brain stuffed with hard fact and pop culture's bargain basement. A few breathless, manic moments later it's all slipping away from you and with the clock ticking, trapped in showbiz frenzy, it all becomes clear - YOU DON'T KNOW JACK! There's over 20 hours of this superb stuff on the CD and you'll be kicking yourself you haven't got one.

Winalotto

http://www.winalotto.com
The instigators of this outfit were obviously unaware of the similarity between their game's name and a well known brand of dogfood. Hey, the similarities don't end there. This site is essentially advertising a phone service which enters you into the New South Wales Lottery in Australia for free. Free, that is, if you don't count the price of the phone call, the charges for which don't appear to be listed anywhere! This suggests that the price of a ticket is far less than the phone call itself but, say, if you phone from a 'friend's house' or work perhaps (perish the thought) then it's almost worth trying your luck. And lastly, don't tell Rosie Banks Ü Eddie would never forgive us!

Transport Tycoon Deluxe

http://www.cybercity.hko.net/london/cool/tycoon/tycoon.htm
James Dove loved the game Transport Tycoon so much that he set up this site. James says If you want to get addicted then go out and get this game as soon as possible (NB I am not being payed to say this). The object of the game is to set up a successful transport business over a timespan of 100 years - which should give you a fair bit of scope. What James' object is is anyone's guess. A career in advertising, maybe?

Watch out Hetty Wainthrop! A weekly mystery for budding Agatha Christie types, the case is emailed to previously signed up amateur sleuths in the UK on a Wednesday morning. They have until the next day to complete their investigations. Additional clues in the form of statements from witnesses, police officers on the scene and the coroner's report are supplied, along with a description of the murder weapon and other forensic evidence. Over the next 24 hours players activate their little grey cells and start to piece together clues. Solve the case quickly because before you can say Miss Marple the culprit is apprehended and all is revealed.

Sandbox

http://www.sandbox.net/
Forget Phillip Marlowe, Columbo and Magnum. If you've been framed and look more guilty than Ronnie Biggs, then call on cigar smoking, Vietnam hero Sam Webb. By adopting his character you embark on an interactive cyber-mystery with more twists than The Usual Suspects. In the search for Vincent, you pit yourself against the anonymous Hyena and the beautiful twins: Nikki and Vikki DuPont. (Was Vincent really the father of Vikki's child, despite being married to Nikki and officially missing? ) With pictures of all the characters, it's a bit of a mix between a Columbo mystery and an episode of Dallas. By successfully unravelling the clues you can win yourself an Internet shopping spree. I still think the butler did it!

Psygnosis

http://www.psygnosis.com
Ludicrously successful, yet retaining a large dose of cultish cred, Psygnosis is one of the world's key console and PC games developers. From the frustratingly foolhardy Lemmings to the space-age speed-thrill of WipeOut, the company can do no wrong. Its Web site, as you'd imagine, is highly evolved - demos, screensavers and the skinny on upcoming games. Regularly updated with details of releases (including Europe), formats and a technical support option, it is no more or less than you'd expect.

Interactive Crossword

http://www.crossworld.co.uk
Hooked onto Events online's What's On Web site for the UK is the home of the interactive Internet crossword. The clues are not particularly taxing - it's more like the crosswords in the Sun than the cryptic stuff that appears in the Times. What's more you don't get the satisfaction of crossing out each clue as you fill in the answer. If you're after a 10 minute diversion in the middle of a busy day it's worth a whirl.

Intelligent Gamer Online

http://igonline.escape.com
A kind of snobbish attitude distinguishes this from other games review mags, but the thing is they have some good writers giving the serious lowdown on all sorts of stuff you'll want to know. As well as previewing and reviewing games for every system you can imagine (Saturn, Genesis, SNES, Playstation, Atari, Mac, PC and arcade), there are articles on upcoming products and reports from exhibitions. A very informative read.

Occasionally some of the information has dropped off and there is the odd 404 error, but basically all the new games get a mention somewhere. Other resource links Ü newsgroups, developer's pages etc Ü are hidden around the place and there is even entertainment to be had in the About Us section. Check the photo. These people are prime contenders for geek of the week. Fetch!

Gremlin

http://www.gremlin.com/
Sheffield's Gremlin have risen from turning out 8-bit games for the Zx Spectrum to producing multimedia blockbusters for the PC. Demos of many of their most successful titles, such as Normality Inc. and Fatal Racing, can be downloaded from this Web site. You'll also find screensavers, patches, tips and cheats. For those who like to turn back the clock you can play some of their earlier Zx spectrum efforts. The software to turn your PC into a 8-bit machine is downloaded with the game. Gremlin have certainly packed a lot into their pages, but why did they spoilt them by using such an unattractive green background? Then again game players are not renowned for their taste (see Game On, Internet 22, September 1996).

Anyway, if you want to find out all the latest news, reviews, and information about the new generation of video games (no Grandstand tennis here, thank you very much), then give this site a look. It looks at the four main platforms, PlayStation, Saturn, Nintendo 64 and 3DO, and as well as news and reviews, features competitions, and celebrity 'me and my....' interviews. It's also well designed and wonderfully easy to navigate.

Digital Nostalgia

http://www.umich.edu/~webspin/games
As the retro-gaming revival reaches fever pitch, people too young to remember Pac-Man and those who've never even heard of Pong, are reaching for the reassuringly old school throwback of vintage computer and arcade games. Digital Nostalgia provides a timely introduction to the plinky, low-res, race about and shoot...well, the only thing that moves, of Asteroids, Space Invaders and all those other 8-bit wonders that kept kids glued to their Atari consoles. All games are less than 600Kb and specially reformatted for PCs and emulators, there's a slight name change but you'll get the hang of it. A thorough tutorial irons out most problems regarding downloads, zipped files and running games under Windows or DOS so prepare to return to pre-Super Mario and Sonic innocence and life before Lemmings, The Sony Playstation, and even Doom.

Cosmo's Conundrum

http://www.uk.cosmoasis.com
If you are the type of person who is hooked on pub quiz machines, youâll enjoy competing in Cosmoâs Conundrum, a new multi player Java based online trivia game. You compete against Zeek, a gangly and rather smug looking Martian and any other online players in a head-to-head compo. If you win you qualify for the cash round which takes place later on that day. These quizzes have been popular in the states for a while but this is the first of itâs kind, aimed solely at the British market. This means questions about the lovelife of Cindy Beale rather than the reruns of I Love Lucy. Admittedly the cash isnât likely to pay off the mortgage but it might pay for the telephone time it takes to play the game and after all, the fun is the taking part not the winning! One of the real benefits of this game at the moment is that it has only recently been released. Get in quick and see yourself on the Hall of fame. Good luck.

3DO

http://www.3DO.com
3DO is an unique computer company, as it produces both hardware and software. Despite disastrous sales of last year's 3DO console, electronic giant Matsushita has just bought the rights to a new 64-bit model for $100 million. Currently 3DO's software publishing arm, Studio 3DO, is bracing itself for the launch of Meridian 59 , a game which combines graphics, email and IRC. Here you can download a beta version, but be quick, once the full game's released the demo version will expire. This site maybe huge, but a clear layout and an onsite search engine make for easy navigation. This is one site game-heads must visit.
