http://www.webgrrls.com/
Web-Grrl: noun meaning 1. a woman on the Web, 2. a member of the cool
international networking group, 3. someone totally sassy who created this
spunky little site. Operating as the admin arm of a bunch of cybersisters,
Webgrrls is looking for people to start groups around the world. That way,
if you want a job, HTML lessons, an email address or a programmer, you'll
already be electronically linked to someone who can help. There are also
a set of resources on women-owned businesses and organisations, our-bodies-ourselves
sort of links and stuff for the whole family. And far from being a boy-free
zone you're encouraged to add your best boy pages.

'Ello, 'ello, 'ello... the Met's on the Net, with those boys and girls
in blue out to win cyber-hearts. After a brief intro from the Commissioner
no less (in a choice of audio or text formats but sadly notta lotta content),
take a tour of the force's history, its mission and what it does, or make
a voluntary statement on one of several interactive feedback forms. An easily
navigable site with pictures of cops on horses, in boats and with dogs,
but there's almost nil on multi-cultural outreach. As a PR exercise, it's
a fair cop, though.

Coming off like an online girls' or boys' (it is the 90s) dating database,
this is a selection of nerdy lads in the business with pictures of what
they look like. It's a revelation. It's also list after list of top techie
Netheads. Some of them are real Internet movers and shakers, so if you're
good they'll show you their software.

http://www.TheCyberMom.com/
This is 'a home on the Net for Moms with modems' designed around the
concept of a 50s-style interior, with every link in the house leading to
CyberMom-generated content or pertinent pages elsewhere. The family room
has movie reviews and the playroom looks at kid's software and CD-Rom. The
kitchen has mouthwatering recipes for every occasion, whilst the bedroom
is Mom's boudoir, with something for her in it, like a review of the latest
Patricia Cornwell. The powder room contains all sorts of girlie secrets
and the back porch is the place to chew the fat. Not only is this a great
concept, with its reassuringly familiar home-from-home graphical user metaphor,
but its friendly, capable, slightly tongue in cheek chivvying supplies just
the right tone and perspective for 'real' mums. In fact, everyone is welcome
and now and then Dad chips in with his own opinions and recommendations.
Content is strong, old stuff is stored in the attic, and there's an address
book that lists all the mentioned links.

http://www.innotts.co.uk/~ukindia
This site forgets to mention on its home page that it's hoping to provide
a service for people from the Indian subcontinent now based in the UK. Perhaps
it's self-expanatory and I'm just being stupid. Basically what it does is
bundle together loads of odd pages and links Ü some general (search
engines, kids' pages, sport and shopping) and some specialist (learn to
read Hindi, resources on Sikhism, Islam, Hinduism and a smattering of news
from India and Parkistan). The 'pay by results Ü whatever you think
is appropriate' advertising approach is way ahead of its time.

http://www.feminist.org/
Rather unfortunately the Women's Web World site design looks a lot like
a pack of Feminax. As a gateway to resources on feminism it is OK, with
a few good journals, recent research and so on. What it does best, however,
is act as an administrative system co-ordinating direct action across the
States. Most of the interesting material is American, so don't expect too
much.

http://www.netnoir.com/
One heck of a huge community group to try and cater for, NetNoir is
on a cultural mission. It is committed to creating quality Afrocentric content
- politics, music, sport, education - be it online history lessons or Greg
Tate on flava-fol soundz. It's full service is on AOL but the Web site will
be up to speed soon. It's inclusive, not exclusive, and worth checking out.

The sheer scope of this site means that in actual fact it's for everyone.
From Chicano history to Mexican Day of the Dead, from Eco-travel in Latin
America to the world's best burrito - the links are endless, the emphasis
is on diversity, and it's full of wonderful surprises.

CPSR has effected several very successful lobbies in its 15-year existence,
including a high profile campaign to get the US Government to reveal the
extent of its electronic surveillance activities. As an organisation it
is committed to educating the policymakers and the public into informed
choices concerning the applications of information technology. It campaigns
on privacy, gender issues, and is anxious to promote universal public access
to the growing communications infrastructure. All pretty interesting and
very laudable.

here. Otherwise, this is an amusing set of pages for the terminally techie
obsessed.

Although these pages may be of interest to people further afield, the
basic principle behind them is to provide a community information service
for the people of Coventry. Information is fairly straightforward and simple
- lists of parks, sports facilities, galleries, museums, theatres etc and
some local environment and education material. The Net is an ideal tool
to use in this way. No doubt this service will continue to grow and will
almost certainly prosper.

http://www.iol.ie/
Ireland's premier Internet service is the home to many of the country's
main businesses, including Allied Irish Bank, Baileys Irish Cream and 2FM
the main music station. A friendly interface, plenty of links and some useful
resources go to make up a good introduction to business and entertainment
in Ireland. All fairly straight-laced and not a 'top-o'-the-mornin' in sight.

Wild claims that the electronic anonymity of the Internet is somehow
'post-gender' are fiercely contested by a new generation of cyberfeminists,
geek girls and the aforementioned techno whores. Full-on feminist attitude
just manages to triumph over mouthy academic theorising in complex, non-reductive
essays, treatises and anecdotes on women's relationship with technology,
cyberculture and circuit boys.
